This past weekend NorthEast Barbell Club had 8 athletes competing at the New Haven Weightlifting Open. This was an awesome experience as we had three lifters competing for the very first time. Out of the 8 athletes that competed, 5 of them medal’ed in their weight class!
Both of our ladies, Emily Glenn and Shaylyn Lyons represented NorthEast Barbell Club very well. Emily represented us in the 53kg weight class and swept her way to a Gold Medal in her 1st weightlifting meet! Emily went for 4/6 in her lifts and achieved a small training PR on her last Clean & Jerk attempt. We’ll call it a training PR because although she hit the lift, she pressed out the jerk. Whatever… still counts as a training PR! Shaylyn had an excellent meet, also winning Gold in the 69kg division. Shaylyn also went 4/6 on her lifts and had a beautiful split jerk on her final Clean & Jerk attempt. She narrowly missed the 73kg attempt as the split jerk was just a hair off!
The Men’s division was led by Coach Adam, Matt Lee, Liam Haller, Ray Roldan, Phil Carr and Mike Guerrero. This was the very first meet for Coach Adam who went 4/6, going perfect on his Clean & Jerks in the 85kg weight class. Another first timer on the platform was Mike Guerrero. Mike had a great debut at the 94kg weight class, going 5/6 on his lifts and achieving a PR on his Clean & Jerk. Phil Carr had a breakout performance going 6/6 on the day and achieving competition PRs for the Snatch, Clean & Jerk and Total! To make it even better he did this all at a new lower weight class, 85kg. Our Junior Lifter, Liam Haller, earned a Bronze medal in the 69kg weight class and was voted most outstanding Junior Lifter! Juniors are lifters under the age of 20. Liam had two extremely close attempts at 111kg Clean & Jerk. The lift would have qualified him for the Junior National Weightlifting Meet. He’s got some more time to qualify, so he is looking to make the qualifying total at the next competition! Our strongest lifter, Matt Lee, represented us at the 105kg weight class. Matt had an outstanding performance tying his PR snatch, 118kg, and hitting a lifetime PR Clean & Jerk at 150kg! This performance earned him the silver medal! Last but not least, Ray Roldan had another spectacular performance. Ray went perfect on the day, absolutely smoking each lift in the 77kg division. He PR’d his total by 10kg and is looking more confident than ever. Ray has really stepped up his game and is able to showcase his talents on the platform.
The 8 athletes that competed this weekend really showed how strong NorthEast Barbell Club is becoming. Our lifters were able to showcase their consistency, sound technique and love for the sport. Our next competition is Sunday, June 12th @The Athletes Warehouse in Pleasantville. The guys over there run a great meet and have the sickest facility in Westchester, so I am expecting a big turnout from NorthEast Barbell Club!
