Breaking the Cycle of Bad Habits: There Are No Excuses, You Are Your Own Worst Enemy
Everyone in the gym has asked the question, “Who is Porko? Is that you?” Yes, it is me. I write this on my water and refer to myself with this endearing nickname for a reason. It reminds me that I am my own worst enemy. It reminds me that every year, I repeat the same vicious cycle. A cycle that Manny, Cameron and myself have mapped out to a T.
January: I am out of shape
February: I decide to start trying to get back into shape for The Open.
March & April: I get super serious about training and nutrition and start to get into shape.
May-July: I eat like the world is going to end and workout 1 to two times a week.
August-November: I get back into the best shape of the year and close to my goal for each year.
December: I fall off the wagon and the cycle begins again.
I could sit here and tell you that I have 2 jobs. I have a wife and 2 kids that I support. I am extremely family oriented. I could give you 50 excuses as to why I have trouble staying the course of a healthy lifestyle, but there really is no excuse. Why does this happen? Why do I lose motivation to eat properly and workout regularly? It’s stupidity. What I do to my body throughout the year is completely wrong and unhealthy. I put my body through extremes, which is the worst thing you could do to yourself. I put my love for food above all things. Read that sentence again and let it sink in as to how stupid that sounds. I would rather be unhealthy and put myself at risk of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes rather than have the discipline to moderate the way I fuel my body and enjoy my meals.
As I wrote above, I have a wife and 2 kids. Do I want to be around for them? Do I want to grow old with them? Do I want to be a positive influence on my kids so that they don’t end up repeating my horrible lifestyle? The answer to all of these questions is of course, yes.
We, as a society, get caught up in the diet fads. What is the new and super effective way to get me into my bikini for the summer? How can I look good in two weeks when I go on vacation? What we fail to realize is that our goals shouldn’t be based around certain trips or events in our lives. We should not diet for 6 weeks then indulge for 6 months only to dive back into a diet for another 6 weeks. It’s an ugly cycle and one that only breaks our bodies down in the process.
You have to look at yourself…I mean really look at yourself and realize the hundreds of excuses you make weekly as to why you couldn’t do something. Maybe you have legitimate reasons. I understand some people have medical issues, sick family members and other extenuating circumstances, but if your reasoning is “I’m too busy to cook, ordering out is easier” or “I just had a really busy day and couldn’t make it to the gym” then you are only lying to yourself.
You may look at my situation and say to yourself that it is easy for me and the other coaches because we work at a gym. To a certain extent you are right, but remember that this is new to me. I worked a regular desk job like the rest of you for over ten years before I made this change. When I wanted to make time for the gym and cooking I found the time, even when it seemed impossible. Don’t be your own worst enemy. Learn to be your number one motivator, the person who holds you accountable and keeps you accountable. Don’t rely on someone else to do it for you because in the end, if you don’t have the mindset and motivation to do it for yourself, no one can convince you to do it.
