I Wanna Go Fast!
Whether starting out, or someone who has been doing CrossFit for a few years, it can be exciting. The constant variance of movements and workouts gives us something to look forward to. For this week’s blog, I wanted to draw a parallel between Ricky Bobby (Talladega Nights) and our approach to workouts and movements.
If you haven’t seen the movie starring Will Ferrell, I highly recommend it for a good laugh. But you don’t need to see it in order to understand an often overlooked message. Throughout the movie, Ricky Bobby, says “I wanna go fast”. This is what eventually leads him to becoming a top driver in Nascar. Unfortunately, at some point he is involved in a car crash that leaves him injured and scared to get back behind the wheel. Ricky eventually has to relearn how to drive and regain his confidence behind the wheel before ultimately defeating his arch nemesis.
So, what does a fictional race car driver have to do with CrossFit and functional fitness? As a coach, I have seen people get caught up in the excitement of a workout and throwing form/pacing out the window just to go fast (myself included). But, as we learned with Ricky Bobby, going fast can be reckless and we increase our chances of injury. When an injury due to a pursuit of speed with disregard for consequences occurs, what happens? We have to take steps backward and relearn movements. Sometimes even regain that confidence of what we are capable of. Now, I am not saying to move at a snail’s pace all the time. I am, however, saying that we shouldn’t neglect quality movement and control for a top time in a workout or a max lift.
Let the story of Ricky Bobby serve as a reminder that our goal shouldn’t always be “I wanna go fast”. We should let speed come as a result of our proficiency in movements and workouts. It can be hard to let your gym buddy beat you in a workout, to go lighter than other people in class or to not finish a workout, but wouldn’t it be that much harder to come back from an injury? Our fitness journey is a long one, try not to get caught up in the day to day stuff at the risk of sacrificing our long term goals.
